A case of Bronchial asthma

A female 30 years of age, fair, blonde, light complexion, married, working, came on 3/3/1993 with the following symptoms -

Chief Complaints -

1) Asthmatic attack every year during winter (JANUARY to MARCH)
- Childhood Asthma
- Needs to be hospitalised every year
- Dyspnoea without exertion (breathlessness)
- Hoarseness of voice since many years
- It started with cold and running nose
- Later it caused breathlessness
<< talking, slightest exertion
<< dust, perfumes, smoke, shellfish, crabs, lobster, prawns

2)Allergic skin reaction after eating fish (URTICARIA)
- Swelling of the hands and fingers with violent itching
- Itching in the throat with spasm in throat
<< Shell fish, even a touch << the skin & respiratory allergies
>> cold water application

Associated Complaints-

Recurrent allergic cold, running nose, Hypertension causing throbbing headaches, mental irritation

Personal History

Appetite- Normal

Craving- fish, spicy pungent food

Aversion- sweets

Thirst- 10 glasses / day

Stool- normal

Urine- normal

Perspiration- profuse allover the body

Menstruation- 3-4 days, regular, feels better after menstruation

Sleep- Cannot sleep if she gets late to sleep at night

Dreams- household matters

Thermal State - Hot

Physical Examination -

Appearance- obese
Weight-65 kgs.
Tongue- protruding, trembling
Throat- red, shining
Chest- wheezing

Past History - Tonsillectomy done in childhood

Family History -

Father - Allergic bronchitis, Ischemic Heart disease, Hypertension
Mother - Heart disease, Diabetes

Investigations -

ALLERGY TEST REPORT (Intradermal & Scratch Test)
Buffer Saline Control Reading
Histamine Control Reading - +++

POLLENS : Casuarina Eucalyptus ++

FUNGI : Aspergillusfumigatus ++

DUST : House dust ++, Dust mite ++, Cobweb ++

NON-JUICY FOODS : Arhar Dal ++, Masoor Dal ++, Moong Dal ++,  
                           Kabuli chana ++

JUICY FOODS : Tomatoes ++

MIS. : Prawns +++, Shell fish +++

( ++ ) - Mild
( +++ ) - Moderately severe

Treatment advised -

- Spacchaler +
- Asthalin inhaler 3 -- 3 -- 3
- Beclate inhaler 3 -- 3 -- 3
- Cap. Ventorlin 1 -- -- 1


Mental State -

Very bold,social in nature. Easily makes friends.
Loquacious, Loud speech.
Talks in English all the while inspite of knowing the language she was interviewed in.
Speech fast & hasty
Loves to keep herself busy
Restless mentally & physically.

Prescriptive totality -

- Asthmatic attack every year during winter (JANUARY to MARCH)
- Dyspnoea without exertion (breathlessness)
<< dust, perfumes, smoke, shellfish, crabs, lobster, prawns
- even a touch << the skin & respiratory allergies.
>> in open & fresh air
Menstruation- 3-4 days, regular, feels better after menstruation
Thermal State - Hot
Very bold,social in nature. Easily makes friends.
Loquacious, Loud speech.
Talks in English all the while inspite of knowing the language she was interviewed in.

Loves to keep herself busy

Treatment -

Apis melifica 1000 c (single dose) was prescribed on above indications as a similimum or a Constitutional remedy, which was repeated approximately after every 1 or 2 months, as and when required.

Natrum sulph 6x was given every 3 hourly along with hot water during the acute attacks.

Follow up -

- Treatment continued for almost 2 & half years.
- Patient started feeling better gradually. Next year there was no hospitalisation since the attack was tolerable.
- Every year the intensity of the attack was decreasing gradually by about 50 %.
- The previous attacks used to continue for 3 to 4 weaks.
Every year the duration of the attack was also decreasing.

Present condition (Dec. 2000)

The patient has not suffered from asthmatic attack in last 4 years.
There is no Urtecaria in last 3 years.
The patient eats all kinds of shell fish without any aggravations either on skin or in the respiratory organs.
